CEREMONY OF THE UNVEILING OF THE MEMORIAL PLAQUE DEDICATED TO JOVAN DUČIĆ IN GENEVA, 05THNOVEMBER, 2018 |
The ceremony of the unveiling of the memorial plaque dedicated to Jovan Dučić, a great Serbian writer and diplomat, was held in Geneva, on November 5th, 2018.Jovan Dučić (1874-1943) studied at the University of Geneva from 1899 to 1906 and later on, from 1924 to 1925, he was appointed Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes to the League of Nations in Geneva.
The memorial plaque, placed at the address where Jovan Dučić lived during his studies in Geneva, is a gift from the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia to the City of Geneva, and it reads: "Here lived during his studies Jovan Dučić(1874-1943 ), prince of Serbian poetry, writer, traveler and diplomat. In commemoration of the giant of Serbian literature, Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, November 2018 ".
The Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in the Swiss Confederation has initiated installing of the memorial plaque, wanting to contribute to the remembrance of this great writer and diplomat and to raise awareness about Dučić's ties to Switzerland.
The attendees were addressed by a member of the City Council of Geneva, Mr. RémyPagani, who expressed his gratitude for this valuable gift in memory of the famous former inhabitant of Geneva, then the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Swiss Confederation Mrs. SnežanaJanković, Mr. MilovanDanojlić, one of the greatest Serbian writers of nowadays, and writer and translator Mr. Slobodan Despot.
After the ceremony, the City of Geneva and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia organized a cocktail in "PalaisEynard", where photographs of Jovan Dučić from his student time in Geneva, as well as photocopies of his student noteswere exhibited.
