Debate Held in the Swiss Parliament on the Extension of SWISSCOY's Participation in the KFOR Mission and the Human Rights of the Serbian Community in Kosovo and Metohija

12. Jun 2026.
On 11 June 2026, the National Council of the Swiss Parliament considered Proposal No. 25.093, submitted by the Swiss Government, which provides for the extension of the participation of the Swiss contingent (SWISSCOY) in the KFOR mission in Kosovo and Metohija until the end of 2029.

During the debate, in addition to the security and operational aspects of the continued engagement, considerable attention was devoted to the situation and human rights of the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija. Several members of parliament highlighted the challenges faced by the Serbian community, including issues related to human rights violations.

The discussion emphasized that sustainable stability in the province requires consistent respect for the rights of all communities and their effective protection. Some members of parliament expressed the view that the international community should devote greater attention to the position of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija and to the implementation of existing international obligations in the field of human rights.

At the same time, differing views were expressed regarding the continuation of Switzerland’s participation in the KFOR mission. While some parliamentarians stressed the importance of Switzerland’s contribution to maintaining a secure environment and regional stability, others raised questions concerning the duration of the mission, its costs, and its compatibility with Switzerland’s policy of military neutrality.

The debate on Proposal No. 25.093 forms part of the regular parliamentary procedure through which decisions are made regarding Switzerland’s future participation in international peacekeeping missions.
