Meeting of Representatives of Serbian Associations in Switzerland at the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Bern
The participants were addressed by Dr. Ivan Trifunović, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Switzerland; H.E. Mihajlo Šaulić, Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in Zurich; as well as Ms. Mélanie Schmutz, an expert at the Directorate for Immigration and Integration of the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).
The meeting was opened with a welcoming address by Consul General Šaulić, who in his introductory remarks expressed his gratitude to the representatives of the associations for the successful cooperation achieved so far, expressing his wish that it be continued and further enhanced in the period ahead. On that occasion, he emphasized that Serbian associations in Switzerland play an important role in presenting the Republic of Serbia in the best possible light to the citizens and institutions of the host country, thereby contributing to the strengthening of mutual understanding and trust.
In his address, Ambassador Trifunović highlighted the importance of unity and mutual cooperation among Serbian associations, as well as the value of their networking. He offered the support of the Embassy in organizing future activities and initiatives, stressing that the Serbian diaspora in Switzerland represents a strong bridge connecting the two countries. He particularly pointed out the significant contribution of the diaspora to the economic development of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the high level of integration of Serbian citizens into Swiss society. At the same time, he praised the fact that members of the Serbian community nurture and preserve the Serbian language, culture, and traditions. The Ambassador announced that in 2026 the 110th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Swiss Confederation will be marked, presented part of the Embassy’s planned activities, and invited the present representatives of associations to actively participate in the celebration of this important jubilee.
Ms. Mélanie Schmutz presented the basic elements of Switzerland’s integration policy and, in a brief presentation, pointed to concrete opportunities for enhancing cooperation between diaspora associations and cantonal and federal institutions, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue and partnership.
Following these addresses, each of the representatives present had the opportunity to briefly introduce themselves, present the areas of activity of their association, and outline plans for future activities. The meeting continued with a discussion during which participants asked questions of the speakers and exchanged views on topics of common interest.
The meeting concluded with a formal reception, during which the guests had the opportunity, in an informal atmosphere, to continue discussions, exchange contacts, and further enhance mutual cooperation.
The entire event took place in an open and constructive atmosphere, with a clearly expressed willingness of all participants to further strengthen cooperation between the diplomatic and consular representations of the Republic of Serbia and the Serbian community in Switzerland.
