Serbia's Elections: A Victory for Democracy

26. Oct 2026.
The most important news from Serbia's parliamentary elections held on October 25 is not simply who won or lost. What matters most is that Serbia has demonstrated, contrary to the predictions of many, that political change can take place peacefully, through the ballot box, and with respect for the will of the people.

The ruling party's timely acknowledgment of electoral defeat is particularly significant. It has paved the way for a peaceful transfer of power and provided an inspiring example of democratic maturity. This is a victory not only for those who won the elections, but also for Serbian democracy and all citizens of Serbia, regardless of their political convictions.

The Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Switzerland extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in these elections, particularly to all Serbian citizens who cast their ballots at polling stations in Switzerland. Their participation, patience and commitment to exercising their democratic rights are deeply appreciated.

In light of this inspiring demonstration of democratic commitment, the unfounded allegations that Serbian diplomatic and consular missions sought to prevent voting are particularly regrettable. Such accusations should not overshadow the extraordinary efforts of citizens and election officials alike.

Democracy is measured not only by the ability to win elections, but also by the willingness to accept defeat. Serbia has shown that it is capable of both.

The events of October 25 send a powerful message beyond Serbia's borders: Serbia firmly belongs to the European family of democratic nations - not only by virtue of its geography, history and culture, but also through its people's commitment to the democratic values on which modern Europe is founded.
