Christian Imark in an Op-Ed for Politika: Serbia and Switzerland Are Closer Than We Think
In his article entitled “Serbia and Switzerland Are Closer Than We Think”, Imark shares his impressions of his recent visit to Serbia, highlighting the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage, scientific and technological development, entrepreneurial potential, and the importance of direct contacts between representatives of the two countries and their citizens.
The publication of the article is particularly significant in a year marking 110 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Switzerland. This year’s visit to Belgrade by Guy Parmelin, President of the Swiss Confederation, provided fresh impetus for further cooperation, particularly in the fields of innovation, business, and science.
EXPO 2027 in Belgrade represents another major opportunity to bring the two countries closer together, both by showcasing Serbia in Switzerland and by strengthening economic, scientific, and cultural ties. Switzerland was among the first countries to formally confirm its participation in the international exhibition by signing a participation agreement. In his article, Imark expresses his intention to return to Serbia next year with fellow parliamentarians and friends, anticipating that EXPO will create opportunities for new encounters and initiatives. The article also refers to the expected attendance of Switzerland’s incoming President.
Christian Imark’s article also underscores the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and sustained efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries. Over the past year, the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Bern has intensified its efforts to strengthen political dialogue, expand contacts with Swiss institutions and parliamentarians, and promote Serbia as a reliable partner for cooperation.
Particular attention has been devoted to fostering links between business, scientific, educational, and cultural communities, as well as showcasing Serbia’s development potential in Switzerland.
In this anniversary year, public contributions by Swiss political representatives such as this one help promote mutual understanding and strengthen Serbia’s positive image. They reaffirm that lasting and meaningful bilateral relations are built not only through official visits and institutional cooperation, but also through open dialogue, personal experience, and stronger people-to-people ties.
Christian Imark’s op-ed was published in the daily newspaper Politika on 14 October 2026.
