Commemoration in Martigny for the Victims of the Tragedy in Crans-Montana

09. Jan 2026.
A formal commemoration was held in the city of Martigny in memory of the tragic fire that recently struck the resort of Crans-Montana, in which four citizens of the Republic of Serbia were injured and Stefan Ivanović tragically lost his life.

The Republic of Serbia was represented at the commemoration by the Ambassador to Switzerland, Ivan Trifunović, who paid tribute to the victims on behalf of the Serbian state and expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased. He was the only member of the diplomatic corps who addressed the media as part of the official program.

The ceremony was attended by the highest representatives of Switzerland, led by Swiss President Guy Parmelin, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, and other dignitaries. Numerous members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and religious and humanitarian leaders were also present.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, in the segment reserved for media statements, the attendees were first addressed by the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib. She was followed by a statement from the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia, Ivan Trifunović, and then by Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.

On that occasion, Ambassador Trifunović stated:

“On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Serbia, I wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of all the victims of the tragic events in Crans-Montana. This tragedy has profoundly affected Serbia, particularly as Serbian citizens were among those who lost their lives. The sorrow we feel knows no borders and unites our nations in mourning and compassion.

I would like to pay special tribute to Stefan Ivanović, who lost his life while heroically attempting to save others. His extraordinary courage, selflessness, and humanity represent the highest values we all strive to uphold. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Swiss authorities, emergency services, rescue teams, medical personnel, and all first responders who acted with professionalism, dedication, and compassion in the most difficult moments. In these challenging times, Serbia stands in full solidarity with Switzerland and with all the families affected by this immense loss.”

A special place in remembrance is held by Stefan Ivanović, the young man who demonstrated exceptional bravery during the fire and lost his life while saving others. In his honor, a separate commemoration was held the previous day in Crans-Montana, attended by local officials, representatives of the cantonal authorities, citizens, and members of the Serbian and Swiss communities.

The commemorations in Martigny and Crans-Montana were marked by dignity, solidarity, and shared compassion, reaffirming the closeness of Serbia and Switzerland in moments of profound tragedy.
